Director of Operations
Lead our technical operations team and have ultimate responsibility for website health, performance and availability.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Setting priorities and developing a strategy for site maintenance and Operations team.
- Analyzing the performance of the infrastructure against current needs and planning for improvements.
- Mentoring and hands-on leading of the technical team. We don’t want someone who just delegates.
- Working with upper management, and other departments, to align Operations with high-level goals and projects.
- Ensuring LiveJournal.com adheres to SLAs for availability and performance.
- Work with remote engineering and product development teams to ensure that projects are deployed smoothly and accurately.
- General system and network administration duties as required.
- Release management oversight.
- Interacting with vendors including hosting, Internet, hardware and software vendors.
- Reviewing contracts and procurement.
- Take part in on-call pager-duty rotation.
Requirements:
- 10+ years experience as a system administrator.
- 5+ years as a technical manager working with Customer Service and QA.
- 3+ years of experience with performance tuning of systems and capacity planning management of a highly available, lights-out, remote data center.
- 2+ years of experience building and adhering to operational and capital expenditure budgets.
- A lot of experience with open source technologies.
- Strong leadership skills.
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to present complex ideas in clear, concise fashion to technical and non-technical groups.
- Strong presentation skills necessary to inform and influence a wide range of audiences.
- Successfully worked with an offshore development team (India, Russia, etc).
- Successfully developed processes and procedures in a start-up environment.
- Proven vendor management and negotiation skills.
- Fluency in Perl or shell scripting is required.
